Josh Allen unfazed by Jalen Ramsey’s comments, calls him one of the NFL’s best CBs

Josh Allen unfazed by Jalen Ramsey’s comments, calls him one of the NFL’s best CBs More Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen knows he’ll have to develop ice veins to one day become a starter in the league, which is likely why he told TMZ Sports that he wasn’t bothered by Jalen Ramsey’s recent comments. In fact, Allen took the high road by calling Ramsey one of the best players at his position and appears focused on earning his peers’ respect instead of clapping back at his doubters. For those of you who missed it, Ramsey commented on Allen’s first ever pass with the Bills (posted via Twitter) calling it “A pick waiting to happen.” However, the veteran corner later removed the tweet minutes after it was posted.

Chargers DE Joey Bosa No. 1 overall player on PFF’s top-25 under 25 list More Chargers defensive end Joey Bosa found his way atop of Pro Football Focus’ list as the No. 1 overall player on their top-25 NFL players under the age of 25.

“First, there was American Pharoah who won the Triple Crown for us. Now we head for this one with the same crew, starting with my assistant, the groom and the exercise rider.

They were with Pharoah, and they know what they are doing. We try hard not to show it, but for all of use this is a pressure-packed situation. But this is a great horse. I really love him.  I would put a Western saddle on him and ride him in the Rose Bowl parade if they would let me.”” ”

On June 9, we’ll find out if he is all Baffert believes him to be.

Vaccaro is drawing enough interest that he could sign soon, which may help set the market for the position and get other safeties signed.

Frisco (Tex.) police were investigating the single-car accident that occurred around 4:45 a.m. local time when officers located Williams riding an electric bike near his home. Williams was arrested on the misdemeanor intoxication charge and was released from the jail after he posted a $369 bond, the police said in a news release.

A police spokesperson told USA TODAY Sports that investigators are looking into what role Williams had – if any – in the single-car accident involving the 2017 blue Lamborghini registered to the fifth-year pro. The charges could include fleeing the scene of an accident and striking a structure or highway landscaping.

Police were not immediately investigating Williams for suspicion of driving under the influence.

A Cowboys spokesperson told USA TODAY Sports via email the team did not have a comment on Williams’ arrest “at this time.”cowboys_060

Reuben Foster’s ex-girlfriend will testify that she lied to police about him

The ex-girlfriend of 49ers linebacker Reuben Foster is prepared to testify under oath that she was lying when she told police that he assaulted her.

That’s the word from attorney Stephanie Rickard, who told the Sacramento Bee that her client, Elissa Ennis, will appear in court on Thursday and testify that she was lying when she said Foster hit her.

Ennis was injured when police arrived to take her statement, but she now says she suffered those injuries in a fight with another woman, not with Foster.

Part of it was smart tactics. Cleveland often had Thompson and Nance set an off-ball pick on their way up to LeBron. That first pick was a diversion — a trick to make Boston’s centers pause in the paint, so that LeBron had more room to work up top. Watch Nance slam Tatum near the foul line:

That doesn’t look like much, but Baynes hanging back an extra few feet to patrol Tatum’s man warps the geometry of the play. LeBron can slice in deeper, Nance has more room to dive, and everyone has to rotate further — including Yabusele off of Love.

THE FAMILY WAS in a good place. Last summer, at age 36, Kyle signed a three-year contract with the Cavs, which backed up many summers of hard work at P3, a cutting-edge training center in Santa Barbara that has helped extend his career. It also would enable him to give more to charity; he has quietly given away millions through his foundation over the years.

Kaleb is married and working at Nike in the NBA uniform division. Klayton had become a pastor in Knoxville, Iowa, and is married with a child and another on the way this summer. Laine had just finished her master’s degree. Kevin had overseen massive expansion of his church, the debt from several additions finally paid. Kirk had recently moved home to Pella and gotten a job.

Then in early March, Laine and Kevin returned from a trip to Los Angeles, where they’d watched Kyle play the Lakers and Clippers. They found Kirk ill. He didn’t get better, and they took him to the hospital, where they learned some of his internal organs were failing. Eventually, he was taken to the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City.

“We thought maybe he was a little depressed or something,” Laine said. “But no one would have suspected that he was that sick.”ravens_176

Eagles, Cardinals at opposite ends of Vegas projected win totals

In addition to spending some time looking at the AFC win totals as set by folks in Las Vegas, Tuesday’s PFT Live looked at the NFC numbers.

“I feel real good about our offseason additions, whether it’s free agency or it’s the draft, the coaching staff. We were 9-7 the last two years, I think the team has improved personnel-wise from then, so we’re looking for bigger and greater things this year and years to come. With having Ziggy (Ansah) back healthy, that’s going to be a big thing. And coming back with our wide receiver corps, as you guys are seeing on the screen there, I think our passing offense is going to be just as good as last year, if not better. And with the additions in the running game and our offensive line, I think our offensive output will be even greater than last year.”

Detroit Lions head coach Matt Patricia was indicted on one count of aggravated sexual assault in 1996 but was never tried or convicted, according to Robert Snell of the Detroit News.

Here’s the first line from NFL.com’s article regarding the 37 underclassmen who weren’t drafted in 2018: “A record 106 underclassmen who were granted early eligibility for the 2018 NFL Draft entered Thursday hoping to receive the call of a lifetime, but only 69 did.”

Is it really a “call of a lifetime” if it comes in round six or seven? At that point, it’s better to be undrafted, so that the player can pick his next team instead of having his next team pick him. This allows the player, while working with his agent, to find the best place to learn, to develop, and ultimately to win a spot on the 53-man roster, based in large part on the existing depth chart at the player’s position.

The draft has only seven rounds (down from 12 and as many as 30); a roster has 53 spots. Plenty of undrafted players can and will make it in the NFL. As noted last night on Twitter, the drafted quarterbacks in 2003 were Carson Palmer, Byron Leftwich, Kyle Boller, Rex Grossman, Dave Ragone, Chris Simms, Seneca Wallace, Brian St. Pierre, Drew Henson, Brooks Bollinger, Kliff Kingsbury, Gibran Hamdan, and Ken Dorsey. Undrafted that year was a guy named Tony Romo.broncos_003_4dc71ebe680da54b-180x180

Ravens assigned Chris Ezeala through international player pathway program

The NFL debuted its international player pathway program in 2017 by assigning four players from overseas to NFC South teams and giving them roster exemptions to remain as the 11th player on the practice squad during the season.

I mean, he was here every day, working out through that dead period of winter where players tend to disappear. He was here. Davis Webb was on his hip, trying to learn. They were, like anyone would, trying to glean information from the past, connect dots even though we couldn’t talk football, and working out, training, watching our tape as much as they could without me guiding them through it.

You just knew he was a pro, the way he was handling himself. That was number one for me. Wow, this guy cares. At a time of year when some players may not be looking after themselves so well, he was taking great care of himself. There were good signs at the end of last year. Shurmur broke down all 16 games and found hope in the Giants’ 34-29 loss to the Eagles on Dec. 17. At that point, Manning had been benched, then reinstated, and was playing behind a shot line and without Odell Beckham or Brandon Marshall. And yet, Manning held the Giants in the game, throwing for 434 yards and three touchdowns.

Quinn also has some experience returning punts, and his best chance of making an NFL roster is likely to prove he can contribute on special teams. He thinks he has what it takes to prove that there shouldn’t have been 255 other players chosen before him.

The guy isn’t retiring or anything like that, Edmunds said of Ingram. He’s going to be back and we’re excited and we’re ready for him.

There is no greater bargain in sports than a starting NFL quarterback on a rookie contract. That deal grows by the nth degree when that quarterback was a mid-to-late-round pick, like Dak Prescott.

After paying Prescott pennies, the Dallas Cowboys brass knows it will need to ante up soon.

Yeah, you know at that position, it kind of is what it is, EVP Stephen Jones said Wednesday, via the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. You kind of, when the time comes, [expect to pay him]. I know Dak is going to have a good year this year. I hope it’s up there. It’s going to be as he deserves. He was a fourth-round pick. No one deserves to get paid fairly more than he does.broncos_090_d07000fd8593aad3-180x180

Jets CEO: Sam Darnold shifts team into new gear

The fortunes of an NFL franchise can pivot with the whims of the football gods in a matter of seconds.

The franchise-shifting signal-caller is football’s holy grail. The rarest ones don’t just transform teams; they transform lives.

As comedian David Letterman recently noted, Peyton Manning changed the skyline of Indianapolis with a decade of gridiron brilliance.

If the Jets go back far enough, they can find their own example of a transcendent talent who not only elevated the franchise but also changed the face of professional football. When Joe Namath’s celebrated Super Bowl III Guarantee placed the lowly AFL on equal footing with the venerable NFL, teammate George Sauer compared the reaction to the day Copernicus informed earthlings that the sun wasn’t rotating around them.

When Maccagnan first maneuvered up the board, per NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, it was with designs on Heisman Trophy winner Baker Mayfield.

They (thought) they had no shot at Sam Darnold, who was, of course, their top-rated quarterback, Rapoport explained on NFL Up to the Minute. Then you fast forward a couple weeks after that to the draft. Baker Mayfield goes No. 1, and the Jets really couldn’t believe that the guy they wanted all along — the guy they had no chance of getting — actually just showed up right in their draft spot.

They are over the moon happy with him. They do believe he is their franchise quarterback.

Chargers won’t re-sign Antonio Gates

“Give him credit where credit is due. The 3 was big-time. Definitely huge,” Oladipo said. “But who’s to say they even run that play? We don’t know what happens. It’s unfortunate. It really sucks that they missed that [goaltending call].”

“We can look at the replay,” Pacers forward Lance Stephenson said. “Clearly, clearly a goaltending.”

Chad Pinder put the Athletics ahead 3-1 with a two-run homer in the sixth. Matt Olson’s RBI single in the seventh scored Chapman, who had doubled, and Mark Canha followed with a two-run homer to up the lead to 6-1. Jed Lowrie had a two-run triple in the eighth.

Carlos Correa singled in George Springer in the fourth, the first hit off Manaea since Seattle’s Taylor Motter hit a one-out solo homer in the fifth inning on April 15.

Manaea’s 14-inning hitless streak was the longest for the A’s since the franchise moved to Oakland, topping John Odom’s 13 innings on June 1 and 7, 1968. The only pitcher to throw consecutive no-hitters was Cincinnati’s Johnny Vander Meer against Brooklyn and the Boston Bees in June 1938.

Keuchel allowed a season-high six runs on seven hits in seven innings. Keuchel had allowed three runs or fewer in each of his five previous starts this season.

Houston has lost three of its last four after winning six straight.

On Wednesday, the commission — formed by NCAA president Mark Emmert after a bribery scandal rocked the sport — recommended lifetime bans for cheating coaches; the end of the one-and-done path to the NBA draft; college eligibility for undrafted underclassmen; and more NCAA authority on the grassroots scene.

Jim Haney, executive director of the National Association of Basketball Coaches, said Friday he expects the commission’s announcement to enhance the sport.

“If we have another episode where the Department of Justice or the FBI have to once again get involved in the business of men’s basketball, the resounding response will be ‘nothing’s changed,'” Haney said in a video released Friday. “We have to change. We’ve gotta make sure that our conduct is carried out with integrity, recruiting is taking care of with integrity and we’ve gotta protect the integrity of our sport and the integrity of our profession going forward.”

The NABC had a conference call with key members on Thursday one day after the commission released its lengthy report.

Haney said Kansas coach Bill Self and Saint Joseph’s coach Phil Martelli, who are members of the NCAA oversight committee, will play key roles in implementing the recommendations in the coming months.dolphins_034

NFL investigation: No evidence Derrius Guice was asked invasive questions at combine

On the eve of the draft, the NFL concluded there was no evidence that any team asked LSU running back Derrius Guice if he liked men or if his mother was a prostitute, despite Guice’s assertion last month.

Speaking on Sirius XM Radio on March 7, a couple of days after the NFL combine ended, Guice described his experience, saying, “It was pretty crazy. Some people are really trying to get in your head and test your reaction. … I go in one room, and a team will ask me, ‘Do I like men?’ just to see my reaction. I go in another room, they’ll try to bring up one of my family members or something and tell me, ‘Hey, I heard your mom sells herself. How do you feel about that?'”

Ole Miss declined to comment about its response to the NCAA. Patterson is one of a half-dozen former Ole Miss players who have transferred and requested a waiver to play immediately in 2018.

After a lengthy investigation, the NCAA ruled in December that Ole Miss had shown a lack of institutional control in its football program. Ole Miss previously self-imposed a one-year bowl ban for the 2017 season, but the NCAA added another year to that postseason ban among other penalties. Patterson and others have argued that former head coach Hugh Freeze and others on the Ole Miss staff lied about the scope of the NCAA investigation.

“Every game has been physical,” Gobert said. “At the end of the day, it’s basketball, and even if you try to do something else, we’re just going to keep playing basketball.”

“I saw the video,” Chubb said. “… It was pretty cool to see him actually happy like that. I’m looking forward to working with him.”

Miller had to wade through wave after wave of double teams in the pass rush last season, so his giddiness of having Chubb as a teammate is understandable. Many personnel executives throughout the league believed Chubb was the best defensive player overall in the draft as well as the best pass-rusher on the board.

“You can never have enough pass-rushers” is how Broncos president of football operations and general manager John Elway put it just before formally introducing Chubb on Friday afternoon.

Chubb said he has studied Miller’s work plenty and tried to glean things from Miller’s pass-rush moves that Chubb then used this past season at NC State. Eventually, he became the ACC’s Defensive Player of the Year with 10 sacks and 26 tackles for loss.dolphins_117

How good can Blake Snell get?

Blake Snell might have caught a bad break when the Tampa Bay Rays’ game was postponed on Tuesday, as it meant his next start was delayed by a day, resulting in a matchup against the Boston Red Sox rather than the Baltimore Orioles.

Still, while Friday’s game might be one of his few specific matchups to avoid in leagues with any sort of starts or innings cap, his performance so far this season has exhibited enough of an uptick that he’s worth keeping in there in the vast majority of leagues, regardless of the foe.

After all, this is the team Sean Manaea no-hit six days ago, right?

A shift in his stance on the mound contributed to this improvement, as Snell moved from the third-base side to closer to the middle of the pitching rubber late last season. The shift helped alter his release point, which also contributed to better results from his signature breaking pitches — his curveball and slider. So far this season, Snell’s curve and slider have been worth a combined 3.3 runs above average, already more than he had in 2016 or 2017.

The city’s Public Improvement Commission unanimously approved a proposal by current Red Sox ownership to call the stretch of road Jersey Street, which it was originally named before being changed in 1977 to honor Yawkey the year after he died.

The Red Sox praised the commission’s decision in a statement.

“We recognize we have a long way to go, but remain committed to building a spirit of diversity, inclusivity, and openness within our front office and our ballpark,” the team said. “We look forward to working with the business and civic leaders of Boston to continue to bring about social change in our community.”

The vote drew immediate condemnation from the Yawkey Foundations, the charity named for Yawkey and his wife, Jean.

“As we have said throughout this process, the effort to expunge Tom Yawkey’s name has been based on a false narrative about his life and his historic 43-year ownership of the Red Sox,” the organization said. “The drastic step of renaming the street, now officially sanctioned by the city of Boston (and contradicting the honor the city bestowed upon Tom Yawkey over 40 years ago), will unfortunately give lasting credence to that narrative and unfairly tarnish his name.”sl_cardinals_045

Utah Jazz partner with SpaceStation Gaming

The Utah Jazz has partnered with SpaceStation Gaming, the multi-game esports team founded by Salt Lake City-based social media influencer Shaun “Shonduras” McBride, the two parties told ESPN on Friday.

With the partnership, the Jazz and SpaceStation will share marketing efforts and resources as they continue to push into the esports space. The deal is not a traditional investment, merger or acquisition, as done by many other professional sports teams or their owners, but focuses solely on cross-promoting and sharing of information between the basketball team and the esports organization.

“We weren’t just looking for someone to bring a bunch of money to the table,” McBride told ESPN. “We have a lot of traction with sponsors and opportunities, and SpaceStation has the capability to grow financially, so we weren’t looking necessarily for financial backing. Both of us looked at this partnership as an opportunity to learn from the other person, provide value to the other person and just over-deliver. There’s already been so many sponsor connections that we’ve shared back-and-forth — event, engagement and exposure opportunities, too. It’s just built off of how we can work together to build bigger.”

Smart came off the bench and had nine points, five rebounds, four assists and three blocks in his first action since right thumb surgery. He played 25 minutes wearing a protective splint and had a key assist to Horford late from the bottom of a scrum beneath three Milwaukee players.

“I just tried to make sure I got him the ball and it was going to take everything I had,” Smart said. “They weren’t taking it from me.”

Terry Rozier added 16 points and five assists for Boston. The home team has won all five games in the first-round series, and Game 6 is Thursday in Milwaukee.

Khris Middleton led the Bucks with 23 points, Jabari Parker added 17 points and eight rebounds, and Giannis Antetokounmpo had a series-low 16 points with 10 rebounds and nine assists.

The Celtics led by 16 before Milwaukee rallied to make it 74-70 with 7:33 left. Middleton scored later and was fouled to get Milwaukee within 84-79, but he failed to complete the three-point play.

A few possessions later, Smart managed to squeeze out the pass to Horford with three Bucks draped over him, and Horford easily dropped in a layup to make it 86-79 with 28.1 seconds left.

Milwaukee got within 87-84 after a layup by Eric Bledsoe, but the Celtics hit enough free throws the rest of the way to secure the win.

The Bucks entered the game shooting an NBA playoff-best 54 percent from the field, but they hit just 37 percent for the game (32 of 87) — a series low.

Boston needed an energy boost after slow starts in Games 3 and 4, and Smart gave the Celtics exactly that.jets_014

Betting handles on NFL draft up significantly from 2017, sportsbooks say

While the Cleveland Browns surprised the football world by selecting Baker Mayfield with the top pick in the NFL draft Thursday night, it was new Giants general manager Dave Gettleman who changed the financial fortune of Las Vegas sportsbooks by taking Penn State running back Saquon Barkley at No. 2.

“I thought there was no way a team with a 37-year-old quarterback (Eli Manning) would be dumb enough to draft a running back,” Ed Salmons, the Westgate Las Vegas Superbook’s head football oddsmaker, told ESPN. “I don’t understand why these guys do what they do. I guess that’s why they get fired all the time.”

“Next year, we will probably do fewer unless things are opened up for us,” Salmons said, who cited a 350 percent betting handle increase at his sportsbook.

Nevada sportsbooks could not offer long shot odds for a large group of players to be chosen with the top overall pick. Specifically, offshore markets offered 10-to-1 odds on Mayfield but that also allows a sportsbook to offset that high payout with all the losing tickets for every other player and still guarantee a hold percentage.

The other proposition bets that sealed a financial loser in Nevada were over 1.5 running backs drafted in the first round; three were taken. Also, Washington’s Vita Vea was selected ahead of Marcus Davenport of UT-San Antonio, as the betting steam suggested.

“I needed to get my feeling back,” Ozuna said. “This made feel a lot better.”

Jedd Gyorko added a two-run homer for St. Louis, which has won nine of 11.

Ozuna had just one hit in his previous 24 at-bats prior to a bases-loaded single to cap a three-run third inning that put the Cardinals in front to stay 3-1. Acquired from the Marlins on Dec. 14 for four prospects, the outfielder had struck out 23 times in his previous 20 games. He finished 1 for 4.

“I’m going to keep using it,” Ozuna said of the red bat. “I felt so much better at the plate today.”

Martinez was glad to share the wealth.

“He’s trying to get out of a slump and he’s just trying to go well,” Martinez. “You’re always good to new teammates. I’m just so happy for him. Good at bats. That’s going to help us a lot.”

Ozuna and Martinez actually shared the bat during the game.

“I just took it from the bat boy — and said `let’s go,” Martinez said.

St. Louis manager Mike Matheny was happy to see his slugger break loose.jets_050
