Philip Rivers gets out of his chair and starts gesticulating wildly, like he’s at the line of scrimmage with the play clock ticking down.

We’re watching film on my iPad in a lounge outside the Chargers’ locker room, and this isn’t the first time he’s vacated his seat, enthusiasm taking over.

It’s the game within the game that makes it so awesome, he says. To me, the most fun games are where we get in the no-huddle, we get in kind of a groove and the defense has a Mike linebacker who can go no-huddle with you.

We bring up a play from that game against the Cowboys, Thanksgiving 201It was the day’s fourth snap—well before the no-huddle cat-and-mouse game ensued.

We’re running scissors with [Keenan Allen and Travis Benjamin], which is pretty simple. Dallas played a 2-high coverage with both Quarters and Cover-2 principles. Safety [Jeff Heath’s] width suggested we could get Travis over the top on this thing. It was Thanksgiving so we didn’t have much time to prepare. But we did talk about whether we might get this coverage. We’d get Travis running right down the middle.

Does that all feel a little gross? Does it seem like an authentic turning point away from this incident for Winston, who previously settled a rape case with accuser Erica Kinsman in 2016 and screamed obscenities about the female anatomy while standing in the middle of a college campus? Do you feel OK with the NFL’s much ballyhooed policy on issues of sexual assault and domestic violence that, according to a 2017 Bleacher Report Mag story, delivered the full six-game suspension for two out of 18 offenders?

If you’re Winston and truly maintain your innocence, doesn’t this seem radically unfair? If you’re the Uber driver who came forward, does an apology for being put in a bad position solve anything?

LeSean McCoy’s ex-girlfriend told police she believes he ‘set her up’ for home invasion attack

The ex-girlfriend of Bills running back LeSean McCoy told police she thought McCoy was behind a home invasion Tuesday, which resulted in her going to the hospital after she was beaten and robbed of jewelry.

The Milton police released an event report Thursday revealing more information behind what happened early Tuesday morning, including what was said to police during the invasion. TMZ obtained audio of the 911 call, which can be heard here.

There’s this whole narrative of ‘Why don’t guys just hit ground balls to short?’ The answer is: (a) It’s not that easy and (b) it’s the complete thing you’ve taught yourself your entire baseball career to avoid. If a guy has a chance to hit a homer and a double, and he goes up there trying to slap a ground ball to short, the other team is perfectly fine with that.

I think it gets blown out of proportion when people say, ‘Just hit a ground ball to short.’ You can’t just take a 98 mph cutting fastball in on your hands and do that. Let’s just say I sell out tonight, and I try it four times. The likelihood of me hitting four straight ground balls to short and ending up 4-for-4 are very slim. If I succeed once or maybe twice, at best I’m going to go 2-for-4 with two singles, where if I just play the game, I might go 2-for-4 with a homer and a double. It makes no sense to me.

Police have not identified a suspect in the burglary, but the log described the suspect as a black male who was dressed in all black wearing a mask. The age is not known.

McCoy denied the allegations of domestic violence, child abuse and animal cruelty Tuesday saying the totally baseless and offensive claims were completely false. He hired an attorney Wednesday.

In addition to revealing more details of what happened Tuesday morning, police also released incident reports Thursday from two other domestic disputes between McCoy and Cordon where police were called to their home July 3, 2017, and April 11, 2018. However, none of the incidents involved physical violence.

The incident from last July indicates McCoy was concerned that Cordon may try to either take things or make false accusations about him.

In the past year, the Cleveland Indians’ bullpen has gone from one of the league’s best to the seventh worst since 1988 by sOPS+. Frank Jansky/Icon Sportswire
Consider, once again, the Cleveland bullpen. The club started with six returning relievers, all of them with recent history of fabulous success and none of them notably old. (Miller and Otero are the oldest at 33.) What happened to this half-dozen?

Like the Pacers, LA could have eight expiring contracts on its roster when the season begins.

That number could shrink to six if DeAndre Jordan opts out of his $24.1 million player option and Milos Teodosic is waived by July 15.

Even if Jordan does opt in, the center’s tenure in LA could be short-lived. Because of the lukewarm market in free agency, the best option for Jordan would to be opt in and ask to be traded (similar to what former teammate Chris Paul did last June).

Beside Jordan and Teodosic, Tobias Harris, Marcin Gortat, Boban Marjanovic, Wesley Johnson, Sam Dekker and Patrick Beverley are in the final year of their contracts.

Because Beverley was signed under the 2011 collective bargaining agreement, the guard’s $5 million contract would be used in a trade and not his smaller guaranteed amount.

One would have thought that Eric Bledsoe found a home in Milwaukee. The disgruntled guard, traded from Phoenix in November, was considered a perfect complement to Giannis Antetokounmpo and Khris Middleton.

Now, after a disappointing postseason that saw Bledsoe struggle and the arrival of first-round pick Donte DiVincenzo, Bledsoe is on a $15 million expiring contract and might not remain in Milwaukee.

Forty years after Louisiana Lightning’s historic season for the eventual World Series champions, the 24-year-old Severino is on pace to rewrite the team’s record books. Entering his start Sunday night against the same rival franchise Guidry and Dent helped beat for that famed American League East title, Severino is on track to whiff 278 batters.

What’s more, Severino’s Yankees and this year’s Red Sox have spent much of the first half separated for the division lead by mere percentage points, which means this anniversary year could well end with another Yankees pitcher setting another organizational strikeout record at Fenway Park on another season’s final day. New York travels to Boston in late September for what could be a division-deciding three-game series. Similar to the 1978 pennant chase, the 2018 playoff push could be finalized on a single afternoon at Fenway.

Severino, for his part, said he isn’t on strikeout watch.

The Bengals just had to have Akili Smith.

Once upon a time, the Cincinnati Bengals received a trade offer from the New Orleans Saints so lucrative it could’ve turned the whole franchise around. Instead, the Bengals turned it down to draft quarterback Akili Smith.

Smith made just 17 career starts in four seasons in Cincinnati, throwing five touchdowns and 13 interceptions.

I want to thank the Lord for the first downs that he has been allowing me to achieve. The touchdown is going to come in his timing, but today was a first down. I was finally able to make it to practice with my teammates. It’s great to be back for practices and meetings. Just to be able to feel a part of it means the world. So I’m working harder than I ever have to get back. Ive been making strides over the past month and continue to make progress. Taking it day-by-day, but I’m far from done. The Lord has not finished his work yet. I want to say thank you to the fans and Steelers Nation for the prayers. If it wasn’t for my family, friends and your prayers I wouldn’t be were I am now. They have lifted me and my family through this journey and I ask for you to continue praying for me, as I continue to work daily on improving my health.

Despite that history, they managed just three first half points against New York, fulfilling Rex Ryan’s deal with the devil and allowing Mark Sanchez to make one of two career starts in the AFC Championship Game. Meanwhile, the Packers rallied from their Wild Card start, beat a hobbled Jay Cutler in the NFC title game, and dispatched the Steelers to win their fourth Super Bowl in franchise history. Rodgers won MVP honors that game after throwing for 304 yards and three touchdowns.

Green Bay was in excellent shape to capitalize on its 2010 championship thanks to Rodgers, who leveled up to command the league’s top offense and earn his first NFL MVP award. A 13-3 Patriots team was waiting on the other side, beckoning Rodgers to challenge their status as the NFL’s preeminent dynasty. It was the perfect cauldron to forge a legendary rivalry.

And then the Packers got absolutely torched by Hakeem Nicks (seven catches, 165 yards, two touchdowns) and once again saw their postseason hopes smashed against the rocks after falling for Tom Coughlin’s don’t worry about the Giants, we’re not actually very good siren song. Rodgers needed 46 passes to throw for just 264 yards as Eli Manning soundly outplayed him, sending another disappointed Lambeau crowd back to their local bars to drink brandy Old Fashioneds and stew briefly before reverting to their entirely pleasant natural states.

Paul George has agreed to a four-year, $137 million max contract to stay with the Oklahoma City Thunder, league sources told ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

The deal includes a player option on the fourth year, the sources said.

Without taking any free-agency meetings, George made the announcement that he is staying with the Thunder at a house party in Oklahoma City hosted by Russell Westbrook, sources at the party confirmed.

Paul George looked destined for the Lakers a year ago. Now he’s a core member of a new Thunder legacy.

So that was the case. That’s been the case here, he said. They honestly check the boxes where I needed those boxes to be checked from what a player wants and needs out of a front office, out of a medical group, out of teammates, out of coaching staff. I mean, honestly, they can’t say it anymore [than] that. They checked the boxes on what needs to be checked.

After acquiring Carmelo Anthony in September, the Thunder appeared to have formed a superteam with the then-reigning MVP. However, the season didn’t go as planned, with a bumpy start finally smoothed out by January before an injury to starting shooting guard Andre Roberson derailed it again. The Thunder recovered to finish with 48 wins and the Western Conference’s 4-seed, but they went out in six games to the Jazz in the first round. In George’s final game, one in which Westbrook scored 46 points on 43 shots, he finished with just five points on 2-of-16 shooting.

Here they have made a huge risk in trading for me, knowing I have one year on my deal, George said in part one of SportsCenter’s behind-the-scenes look at his free agency. But I felt I didn’t finish as strong as I could have. Just knowing you left something on the table, even to this point now, it weighs on me.

George, a five-time All-Star, hit unrestricted free agency for the first time in his career after declining his player option last Thursday.

With George re-signed and Carmelo Anthony under contract for next season, the Thunder are headed for a monumental payroll and luxury-tax bill, something ownership is prepared to pay. The Thunder could take measures to reduce their financial stress by using the stretch provision to waive Anthony or negotiating a buyout or trade (Anthony has a no-trade clause, though). The Thunder also are interested in re-signing forward Jerami Grant.

The Mariners are 26-11 in one-run games this season and 22-0 when Diaz enters the game with a one-run lead.

Royals: RHP Ian Kennedy, who experienced tightness on his left side during his start Friday, had his normal throwing day in the bullpen Sunday, but Kansas City manager Ned Yost did not say whether Kennedy would make his next scheduled start. Yost said RF Jorge Soler (fractured toe and placed in the 10-day DL June 17) is still on a six-weeks-or-so recovery, so it’s likely another four weeks before he would return.

Mariners: LHP Wade LeBlanc (3-0, 3.38) will make his 12th starts of the season Tuesday when Seattle starts a three-game series at home against the Angels. LeBlanc hasn’t lost a decision in his 11 starts and the Mariners are 8-3 in those games.RHP Michael Lorenzen’s pinch-hit grand slam leads Reds over Brewers 12-3

It’s tied with Shigetoshi Hasegawa of Seattle (2003) for second-longest streak in the majors by a Japanese-born pitcher. Koji Uehara of Boston had 27 straight scoreless appearances in 2011.

Giants RHP Derek Rodriguez (2-1, 3.82 ERA) makes his sixth major league start. San Francisco has won four of his previous five. Arizona RHP Shelby Miller (0-1, 12.27) makes his second start since returning from Tommy John surgery in the second game of the three-game weekend series.Kyle Hendricks searching for answers when Cubs need him to deliver

Frustrated. Perhaps even exasperated. Pick a similar adjective and it would probably fit the description of Chicago Cubs right-hander Kyle Hendricks’ mood right now. After the second-shortest outing of his career Wednesday night, the former ERA champion is searching for answers.

The Cubs needed someone to help cover for injured Kris Bryant, and once again Baez stepped up with a two-homer night worth the price of admission.

Sean McVay talks up how’hypothetically’ Odell Beckham Jr. would fit with Rams

Keen anticipation was an early hallmark of coach Sean McVay’s play-calling success for the Rams, so it came as no surprise that he utilized the skill when he sat down for breakfast with reporters at the NFL owners meetings Tuesday.

After McVay sipped from a glass of water, but before he was fully settled into his seat or fielded a question, he posed one.

Hypothetically, I think a player of his caliber can kind of really do everything, McVay said.

Asked, hypothetically, how he felt about trading a first-round pick or using other options to acquire a targeted player, McVay replied with what sounded like a not-so-veiled recruiting pitch.

One of the things that being able to play in such a unique environment and atmosphere like L.A., it provides an opportunity to take advantage of that, he said, and that’s something we want to be proactive about.

How would McVay give everyone on a star-laden offense enough touches if, hypothetically, Beckham joined the Rams

As long as we have lot of snaps a game, he said, I think we can keep everybody happy.

On Monday, several people with knowledge of the situation said that the Rams had contacted the Giants about Beckham, who is entering the final year of his contract.

49ers CEO Jed York admitted Wednesday that he and Sherman had to unblock each other on Twitter after the cornerback joined San Francisco as a free agent.

We had to unblock each other on Twitter, York admitted, via Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area.

York, who didn’t explain why they’d blocked each other in the first place, admitted that Sherman’s competitiveness was frustrating when on the other side.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said Wednesday that team owners achieved a priority item by imposing harsher punishment for helmet-inflicted hits while some defenders ripped the rule change designed to reduce concussions. We think this is going to help us take the helmet out of the game, and get it back to where it’s a protective device as opposed to something that can be used as a weapon, Goodell said. Owners approved a 15-yard penalty and possible ejection for any player who lowers his head to initiate contact with his helmet. The move was aimed at reducing the number and severity of concussions and other injuries.patriots_109-223x223
